Highlighting and colouring, straightening and curling, back-combing and top-knotting – all the things we do to our hair, can really damage it over time. There are millions of tips and tricks on getting your hair as first-class as possible, so we have decided to pick our hair stylists brains to get the best tips on hair care (that actually work) and share their little secrets. Here are the top five most important things to learn from our hair gurus:
1. To trim your hair is to grow your hair
It may sound silly but if you want your hair to grow, you need to keep getting it trimmed regularly. If you end up waiting months or even years to get your hair cut you may notice that your hair has become thinner and ‘scraggier’. This is due to split ends. When your ends split, they split up the end until that hair breaks and falls out. Your hair looks scraggier because there is less hair there. To keep and maintain the hair you have longer, we advise that you remove the split ends every couple of months with a miniscule trim.
2. Shampoo three times a week
Just like soap does to your skin, shampoo tends to dry out your hair. Therefore it is recommended for you to shampoo your hair every other day. Skipping shampoos does not mean you need to skip the shower all together; you can get your hair wet and even condition it, just skip the shampoo. Shampooing three times a week allows for your hair to produce natural oils which will keep your hair healthy for longer.
3. Use the right hair products
When reversing the damage from hair dye, styling tools and pollution, investing in a good shampoo and conditioner is a necessary. Some of the products available at supermarkets use silicones, sulfates and parabens which can cause some real damage to your hair. Have you ever noticed how many hair products your hair stylist uses during your haircut or blowout? This is because professional products provide a real benefit to your hair and will help you achieve salon-worthy hair every day.
4. Always use a heat protecting spray
If you are going to use one hair product, make sure that it is heat protecting spray. Heat is the most damaging thing to your hair and applying a little protection spray before heat will dramatically reduce the aftermath damage on your hair. A bottle of heat protecting spray can last a very long time, even with daily use, so there are no excuses for not investing into this product.
5. Great hair takes a lot of work
It is hard to believe that celebrities are human yet alone that they have hair just like mine and yours. But they do, the only difference is that celebrities can afford to hire a team of stylist, use designer extensions and premium hair products which cost a fortune. Unless you’re willing to pay those prices, you’re not going to achieve perfect hair every day with little effort. The perfect hair does not exist. Great hair requires time and patience.
